Trudy Phillip
StatementMy name is Trudy and I am a 45-year-old, self-taught artist. Raised by my late grandmother, a seamstress by trade, she wove together not just fabric but a life for the two of us. Her self-taught craft continues to inspire me on my own creative path.
I learned the quiet power of determination, of forging beauty from simplicity, and of finding peace in the work of one’s hands. Her every stitch radiated pride.
That stillness lives in my portraits. A way of paying homage to her placid strength, her delicate precision, her ability to make something whole from disparate pieces. Each stroke I place mirrors the way she guided fabric through her hands, shaping, mending, creating. I seek to capture that moment of pause, the breath between stitches, the air of meditative focus that surrounded her as she worked.
Through my art, I honour not only the love she gave me but the artistry she embodied. Every rendering captures her essence, holding space for a wonderful testament to the power of patience, the grace of resilience, and the beauty found in the quiet nooks of creative energy.
